Abstract
Soil is one of the habitats for microorganisms, although in hard and dry soil microbes are dormant which will grow when there is moisture. Soil bacteria are the most important part of life in the world, as they are part of biological and chemical systems, and the life of flora and fauna. Bacteria on the soil can routinely produce antibiotics through a chemical process called secondary metabolism. Research has been conducted on the morphological and biochemical characteristics of soil bacteria which is potential to produce antibiotics from forest soils in Lake Kabu, Muara Gula Lama Village, Ujanmas District, Muara Enim Regency. Preliminary test is done by breeding soil bacteria on Nutrien Agar medium. During the incubation period 1 × 24 hours at 37oC temperature, the bacterial colonies that can inhibit the growth of the bacterial sample Escherichia coli ATCC 8939 surroundings was being observed which shows the existence of clear area as a sign of antibiotic produced by bacteria isolate of forest soil of Kabu Lake with the mean diameter of the inhibitory zone ± 8.5. Characterization is done by identification using Gram staining, urease formation, carbohydrate fermentation (glucose, fructose, and lactose) and bacterial motility. Based on the observation of bacterial soil isolate that have been identified showing the characteristics of bacteria Enterobacter cloacae genus.
