Abstract
Nickel Titanium wire used in orthodontic treatment stays in the oral cavity for a long time and can experience corrosion caused by chemical agents such as fluoride found in black tea drinks. Black tea is often served in hot and cold temperatures in both teabags and brewed teas. This study aimed to determine the effect of temperature and black tea forms on the corrosion rate of Nickel Titanium orthodontic wires. Thirty round of NiTi wires with a diameter of 0.016 inches and a length of 11.6 cm were divided into 6 groups, namely group A wires immersed at 10oC of distilled water, B in distilled water at 60oC, C in teabags at 10oC, D in teabags at 60oC , E in brewed tea at 10oC, F in brewed tea at 60oC. The corrosion rate was calculated by looking at the release of nickel ions detected using AAS (Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry) after being immersed for 7 hours. Statistical analysis used Two Way ANOVA and Post-Hoc LSD. The results showed that the release of nickel ions increased by increasing temperature, but did not show a significant effect, while black tea forms showed a significant effect with the higher release of nickel ions in teabags compared with brewed tea and distilled water. The interaction between temperature and black tea forms did not show a significant effect. The conclusion of this study that there was an effect of black tea forms on the corrosion rate of Nickel Titanium orthodontic wire, while there was no effect of black tea temperature on the corrosion rate of Nickel Titanium orthodontic wire.
