Abstract

This research is entitled "The Formation of Virtual Community Social Identity on Facebook Study at the Palembang Regional Gundam Club". The purpose of this research is to know and understand the social identity of the virtual community of the Palembang Region Gundam Club (GCRP). This study uses Social Identity Theory. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative. Data collection techniques using observation, interviews, and documentation. The number of informants in this study were 8 informants. The results of this study indicate that the identity of the gundam lovers group is manifested by the relationship between signs, namely a set of group attributes and activities that contain a value so as to create a strong in-group feeling as the Palembang Regional Gundam Club or a group of loyal, solidarity and simple gundam lovers. This can explain that there is a similarity in social criteria that reflects an identity which is a characteristic or distinctive characteristic that differentiates between in-group and out-group. Through these social criteria, it can be seen that collective behavior cannot be understood and explained at the individual level, but is determined by attributes and activities that contain a value, so that it becomes a social identity.
