Abstract

A research has been conducted with the title Photocatalytic Activity of Bentonite-TiO2 on Photodegradation of Methylene Blue Dyes. Which aims to determine the effect of the bentonite-TiO2 composite on the degradation process of methylene blue. In this study, a bentonite-TiO2 composite was made by impregnating TiO2 metal at bentonite. Bentonite-TiO2 was then characterized using XRD and SEM-EDX. The XRD characterization results showed that there was a shift in the diffraction angle (2θ) which indicated the successful impregnation process of TiO2 compound against bentonite by looking at its diffraction peaks (2θ). SEM results show that activated bentonite still has many gaps compared to TiO2 impregnated bentonite. This shows that the surface of the bentonite has been filled with TiO2 as evidenced by the results of EDX bentonite-TiO2 containing the element Ti as much as 7.03%. The degradation process was carried out in various variables, namely contact time, variable weight of the composite to the dye and irradiated with uv rays from uv lamp with Sankyo Denki brand 10 Watt BLB F10T8 with a wavelength of uv 352 nm. The results of photodegradation were measured for their adsorption using Uv-Vis spectrophotometry. The effectiveness of degradation showed that the best decrease in methylene blue concentration occurred at the maximum contact time of 90 minutes and the maximum composite weight was at 10 mg composite with degradation effectiveness by 99.91% (with irradiation) and 92.26% (without irradiation).
