Abstract
A research has been held for the recovery of cobalt and manganese metals from lithium-ion NMC type battery waste using hydrometallurgical methods which include leaching, solvent extraction, and stripping processes. Sulfuric acid is used as a leaching and stripping agent. The leaching process using H2SO4 with H2O2 and H2SO4 with C6H8O7. The solvent extraction process using commercial extractants Cyanex 272 and D2EHPA are both is saponified by adding a stoichiometric amount of sodium hydroxide solution. From the results of XRD analysis, the cathode powder of NMC battery waste contains multi-phases which include the LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2, LiCoO2, MgO, BaCoO2.22, Na5NiO4 and Zn13Na phases. From the ICP-OES results, the optimal H2SO4 concentration in the leaching process was 1 M with the percentage of cobalt and manganese of 0.001015% and 0.08312%. The percentage value of cobalt and manganese leaching using hydrogen peroxide leaching reagent was higher than using citric acid leaching reagent. The solvent extraction process of Na-Cyanex 272 produced cobalt (org.) and manganese (org.) 4.7142% and 4.7764% pecentages. The stripping process of Co and Mn produced cobalt and manganese 77.78% and 75% pecentages. The solvent extraction process of Na-D2EHPA produced cobalt (aq.) and manganese (org.) 60% and 49% percentages, while the stripping process of manganese produced a manganese (aq.) 62.5% percentages.
