Abstract

Antioxidant are compounds who can resist free radical formation in the body. Free radical are reactive molecule can cause death cells. Natural compounds that are able to act as antioxidants are alkaloid, flavonoids, and phenol. One of the plants that are rich in this compounds is Vernonia amygdalina Del.This research is to optimize yield of rendement and total alkaloid content from stem skin african leaves (Vernonia amygdalina Del.) by investigating the effect of ethanol concentrations (50, 70, and 96% v/v) and stirring time (30, 60, and 90 min) on alkaloid extraction using factorial experiments. The difference in stirring time and solvent concentration with different polarity affects the acquisition of total alkaloid and the yield. The total number of alkaloids and the highest yield value become reference as an optimal treatment. Based on analysis design expert, the optimal treatment result in extraction with 96% ethanol solvent concentration and stirring time in 90 minutes. This result than performed an antioxidant test with FRAP (ferric reducing ability of plasma) method to measure the antioxidant capacity of the stem skin african leaves extract. The optimal treatment of stem skin african leaves extract obtained alkaloid total amount 18,572 mg AE/g and yield value amount 22,957%. That also shows the antioxidant power of 208,652 μg/mL.
