Abstract

Smartphones are one of the technologies that play a very important role in this era of globalization, the attractiveness of smartphones because of it is now increasing to the youth who is vulnerable to being affected. Excessive use of smartphones can cause a decrease in their social skills, they tend to be more engrossed in their smartphones, for a long time and do not care about the circumstances around them. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between smartphone use and social interaction among adolescents. This type of research is a quantitative study with a cross sectional design. The population in this study were students of SMA Negeri 21 Palembang. Sampling in this study with a total sampling of 285 respondents. Instruments in the form of a smartphone use questionnaire and a social interaction questionnaire. Bivariate analysis using was the chi square test. The results show that based on statistical tests, the p-value is ≥0.05, namely 0.653, so it can be concluded that there is no significant (significant) relationship between smartphone use and social interaction among students of SMA Negeri 21 Palembang. Suggestions from researchers are to provide evidence base (knowledge base) of the ability to use smartphones on social interactions in the school environment, provide information about the impact of smartphone use, and knowledge for future researchers.
