Abstract

Indonesia is a country with the largest coconut production in the world. The Total of coco fibre produced per year can reach 1.8 million tons, but only 3% is used. This research aims to determine whether coco fibers can be used as a thermal insulator in buildings and knowing the effect of adding PVAc adhesive to coconut fibers on the thermal conductivity of the insulator and thermal resistance. Research has been conducted in the laboratory of the Department of Biosystems and Agricultural Technology Workshop Faculty of Agriculture, Sriwijaya University from December 2020 until March 2021. This study used a Non-factorial Randomized Block Design (RBD) with a treatment, namely coconut coir composition and adhesive with 5 treatment levels, with research parameters in the form of heat conductivity, specific heat, composite density, and heat diffusivity. The results showed that the lowest thermal conductivity was found in composite P1 (coconut fiber: adhesive = 1: 1) with a value of 1.3192 W/m.K and the higest thermal resistance was found in composite P1 (coconut fiber: adhesive = 1: 1) with a value of 0,218 m2.K/W.
