Abstract

The research on photodegradation of Remazol Red RB using ZnO-Al2O3 photocatalyst has been done. This study aims to determine the ratio of the optimum weight of Al to ZnO needed to degrade Remazol Red RB. The photodegradation process of Remazol Red RB was carried out in several variables including the effect of contact time and the initial concentration of the dye under conditions below pHpzc. Composites ZnO-Al2O3 were made with a mass ratio of ZnO to Al2O3 (1:0.05), (1:0.07) and (1:0.10) and characterized using XRD, SEM and UV-Vis DRS instruments. The ZnO-Al2O3 (1:0.05) composite was selected as a photocatalyst to degrade Remazol Red RB. The XRD characterization results of the ZnO-Al2O3 composite showed the formation of a typical peak at 31o. The energy bandgap value of the ZnO-Al2O3 composites (1:0.05), (1:0.07) and (1:0.10) obtained from the UV-Vis DRS characterization results were 3.16; 3.15 and 2.96 eV. The morphology of the ZnO- Al2O3 (1:0.05) composite characterized using SEM showed that the ZnO- Al2O3 (1: 0.05) surface was granulated with smaller particle sizes compared to ZnO particles and the shape tend to clump with the composition. The constituent elements of Zn, Al and O are 50.16%, 21.26% and 5.28%, respectively. The optimum conditions for photodegradation were obtained at a contact time of 180 minutes at pH 6 with the percent degradation effectiveness of 91.04%. As for the effect of the initial concentration of the dye, it was found that the greatest percentage of greatest dye concentration reduction effectiveness was at a concentration of 50 ppm, namely 89.26%.
