Abstract

Background: Several studies have reported that periodontal treatment such as of scaling and root planning can improve glycemic control for 3 to 4 months, in addition, it also have been reported that adjuvant antimicrobials administration of scaling and root planning is more effective in improving glycemic control and periodontal parameters in type-2 DM patients. However, research on the effect of periodontal treatment on glycemic control in type 1 DM patients is still very limited. Objective: This systematic review aims to determine the effect of periodontal treatment in the form of scaling and root planning with or without adjuvant antimicrobials on glycemic control in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus with periodontitis. Methods: This research is a systematic literature review with qualitative analysis. The journal databases used are PubMed, Google Scholar, DOAJ, and SciElo, the literature used was English journals without limiting the time of year of publication. The obtained journals will be selected then proceeded with bias analysis and data extraction will be carried out. Results: Qualitative analysis conducted in five journals showed that scaling and root planning with or without adjuvant antimicrobials had no significant effect on glycemic control in type 1 DM patients and had significantly affected the improvements of periodontal parameters. Conclusion: The adjuvant antimicrobials was more effective in improving periodontal parameters of type-1 DM patients, but there was no significant change in the glycemic control of type-1 DM patients after receiving periodontal treatment.
