Abstract

An electric motor is an electromagnetic device that can convert electrical energy into mechanical energy. The type of electric motor used in chopper tools or machines for waste infusion bottles and plastic syringes is a single-phase induction motor. The use of an induction motor still causes problems at the time starting when using the DOL (Direct On Line) method, where the starting current can reach 5 - 7 times its nominal current (I_n). Therefore, another method is needed to overcome this problem, namely by using the soft starter method. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of using the soft starter method against the DOL (Direct On Line) method when the chopper of the infusion bottle and plastic spuit is operating. The type of data used is primary data obtained by measuring directly on the object of research. Based on the research data, the value of the voltage and current obtained when starting uses the DOL (Direct On Line) method is 563 V and 29,2 A. Whereas, when starting uses the soft starter method, which is 233 V and 13.7 A (for the soft starter method with automatic voltage regulation), 60 V and 6,4 A (for the soft starter method with manual voltage regulation using a dimmer). The conclusion of the results of this study is the decrease in current surge when using the soft starter method against the DOL (Direct On Line) method with a percentage value of current effectiveness of 53.08% (when operating with the soft starter method with automatic voltage regulation) and 77.74. % (when operating with the soft starter method using a dimer). In addition, the value of torque, power, and electrical energy consumption when using the soft starter method also decreases.
