Abstract

Tunjuk langit rhizome (Helminthostachys zeylanica L.) had active compounds such as flavonoids as antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. Peptic ulcer are lesions of an inflammatory on the gastric mucosa caused by an imbalance between aggressive and defensive factors. The purpose of this study in order to determine the effect of gatroprotective in tunjuk langit rhizome extract on white male Wistar rats induced by absolute ethanol. The extract was obtained by maceration using ethanol solvent 96%. The animal testing were divided into 6 groups, with normal control group using 0.5% Na-CMC, positive control using 20mg/kgBB of omeprazole in 0.5% Na-CMC, negative control using 0.5% Na-CMC, and the treatment group I using extract of tunjuk langit rhizome 100 mg/kgBB, treatment II using extract of tunjuk langit rhizome 200 mg/kg BB, and treatment III using extract of tunjuk langit rhizome 400 mg/kgBB for 14 days. The results of total flavonoid test showed that tunjuk langit rhizome contained 5,11% flavonoids. The ethanol extract of tunjuk langit rhizome was able to protect the gastric mucosal damage of rats where the dose group (100, 200 and 400) mg/kgBB showed a significant difference compared to negative control (p <0.05). Based on the histopathology, extract of tunjuk langit rhizome is able to reduce the necrotic lesions in the gastric mucosa. Extract of tunjuk langit rhizome dose 400 mg/kgBB gave the most effective as gastroprotective based on ulcer index in amount of 6,96 and preventive index in amount of 55,31%.
