Abstract

Background: Periapical lesions are one of the pathological conditions of the oral cavity that have different variations and complexity of anatomical structures compared to other body parts. Some cases of periapical lesions can also occur due to other pathologies that can lead to misinterpretation by dental practitioners in diagnosing which leads to treatment errors. The purpose of this study was to compare the education level of students to the knowledge of periapical lesions on periapical radiographs. Methods: This study was an observational study with a cross sectional approach. This study involved 70 subjects consisting of preclinical students (n=35) and clinical students (n=35). Knowledge of periapical lesions was measured using an online questionnaire method via Google form. The questionnaires contain 20 multiple choice questions and the maximum time for filling out the questionnaire is 20 minutes. Data were analyzed using Chi-square test. Results: The results obtained from the knowledge of the description of the lateral periodontal cyst lesion were mostly known by preclinical and clinical students, while the knowledge of the description of the radicular cyst, apical scar, and periapical abscess was little known in both groups. The results of the chi-square test showed a significant difference between groups of preclinical students and clinical students (p<0.05). Conclusion: Clinical students have better knowledge of periapical lesions than preclinical students in the Department of Dentistry and Oral Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Sriwijaya University
