Abstract

Diarrhea is one of the health problems in developing countries, including Indonesia. The in vivo antidiarrhel activity test of ethanol extract of andong stem (Cordyline fruticosa (L.) A. Cheval) againts Salmonella typhi bacteria was carried out in order to determine the phytochemical screening of ethanol extract of andong stem and to determine the optimum dose of ethanol extract of andong stem as antidiarrheal. The animal test used male white rats Wistar strains which were divided into 6 groups consisting of a normal control group, positive control group using a chloramphenicol dose of 25 mg/kg BW, negative control group using 1% Na CMC suspension and a treatment grroup of ethanol extract of andong stem with variations in the doses of 150, 300, 600 mg/kg BW. Phytochemical analysis results show the presence of flavonoids, phenolics, tannins, and saponins. The number of bacterial colonies at a dose of 600 mg/kg BW from day 2 to day 12 was not significantly different from the positive control. Day 10 the number of bacterial colonies at a dose 600 mg/kg BW and positive control of reached 0.00 cfu/g. The number of bacterial colonies at a dose 300 mg/kg BWon day 12 was not significantly different from a dose of 600 mg/kg BW and a positive control, and on day 10 it reached 0.00 cfu/g. The number of bacterial colonies at a dose of 150 mg/kg BW increased sharply until day 6 and decreased until day 12 with the number of bacterial colonies significantly different with all the test groups. Percent change in rat weight all test group, except the normal group experienced a decrease that was not significantly differet on day 2 of treatment and again increased on day 4 to day 12 for the positive control group, a dose of 600 mg/kg BW, and a dose of 300 mg/kg BW. The stool consistency of the positive control group, the dose of 600 mg/kg BW, and the dose of 300 mg/kg BW were balanced. This indicates that the ethanol extract of the andong stem which has better antidiarrheal activity is a dose of 600 mg/kg BW and there is no significant difference compared to chloramphenicol at a dose of 25 mg/kg BW (p>0.05).
