Abstract
This study aimed to determine whether there was influence of main idea formula model on the ability to understand the text of explanation in Class VIII of Junior High School 1 Kayuagung. The research method used is a quasi-experimental method. The sample of this study consists of two classes VIII.5 as an experimental class that amounted to 35 students with the treatment of learning main idea formula model, and class VIII. 6 as a control class of 35 students using the conventional method used by teachers. Data collection techniques used test and data processing techniques using t-test calculations with SPSS 23 program. The results showed there were differences in test results between the experimental class and control class. The average value obtained by the experimental class, at the initial test was 56.97 increased 16.69 to 73.66 in the final test. While the average value of the control class on the initial test was 53.60 increased by 9.6 to 63.30 in the final test. From the results of the study showed an increase in the experimental class is greater than the control class. This can be seen from the t-test which shows that tcount> ttabel = 4,021> 1.668 with df 68 at 95% success rate (α = 0,05). Because tcount is greater than ttable then HO is rejected. Thus, Ha which states "there is a difference in the ability to understand the text of the explanation between students taught using the main idea formula model with students taught using conventional methods". (μ1 ≠ μ2) is acceptable. With the receipt of Ha, it can be said that the Main Idea Formula model has an influence on the ability to understand the explanatory text in Class VIII Junior High School 1 Kayuagung
