Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the optimal density of kissing gourami sized 8.0±1.0 cm in a closed transportation system for 24 hours, which has good survival and growth after transportation under ideal physiological conditions. This study used a completely randomized design with four treatments and three replications. The treatments were differences of density in plastic bag, namely 40 fish L-1 (P1), 45 fish L-1 (P2), 50 fish L-1 (P3) and 55 fish L-1 (P4). The parameters in this study included survival, absolute weight growth, oxygen consumption level, feed efficiency, blood glucose levels of kissing gourami and water quality. Optimal density of kissing gourami in transportation for 24 hours with the highest survival rate 94.17% was 40 fish L-1 fish and at the end of recovery was 99%. The lowest mean value of blood glucose levels during and after transportation was found in treatment P1 (110.33 mg dL-1) and the highest was in P4 (213.00 mg dL-1) and during recovery the range was 44.3–85.0 mg dL-1 in all treatments. The highest feed efficiency was found in the P2 treatment of 17.61% and the lowest in the P3 treatment of 13.30%. Meanwhile, the parameters of absolute weight growth, survival rate and the level of oxygen consumption at the end of recovery were not significantly different. Water quality before, after transportation and the recovery period measured in this study were temperature 24-30.5ºC, pH 6.5-6.9, dissolved oxygen 5.3-6.9 mg L-1 and ammonia <0.0041 -0.0908 mg L-1. Based on the measurement results, the range of temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen and ammonia in this study was still suitable for aquaculture life.
