Abstract

Sand depots can produce total dust suspended in the workplace. Total dust is classified as particulate matter that can be inhaled by the respiratory system and can cause upper respiratory tract infections. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between total dust suspended and upper respiratory tract infections in sand depot workers in Palembang City. This study used quantitative methods using univariate and bivariate analisis with cross sectional design. The sample were 60 sand depot workers using the purposive sampling technique. Data were collected by Haz-Dust Model EPAM-5000 and questionnaires. The result show 40,0% sand depot workers had an upper respiratory tract infection. Bivariate analysis results shows that the variable total dust suspended (p-value: 0,000) PR: 4,644, use of masks (p-value: 0,000) PR: 0,187, attitude (p-value 0,002) PR: 3,207 and knowledge (p-value 0,005) PR. 3,109, has effect with upper respiratory tract infections in sand depot workers in Palembang City. There is no correlation between gender (p-value : 0,179), age (p-value : 0,223) and body mass index (p-value : 0,223) with upper respiratory tract infections. In conclusion the total dust suspended and the use of masks are the most influential variables in the incidence of upper respiratory tract infections in sand depot workers in Palembang City. Workers should wear masks, check workers' health and health socialization.
