Abstract

Objective: damage of the oral mucosa can arise from trauma, whether physical, chemical, or thermal factors. To reestablish functional integrity of the oral mucosa, a complex process of wound healing begins. Sunflower seed oil contains linoleic acid and vitamin E which have roles in wound healing process, especially in inflammation phase. The purpose of this research was to evaluate the effects of sunflower seed oil on the healing of wounded rat labial mucosa. Method: twenty four male wistar rats with weigh 250-300 grams were divided into four groups. 2 mm deep incision was done on the lower labial mucosa of all rats. The wound of rats in group I, II, III were treated with sunflower seed oil topically 3, 2, and 1 time in 12 hours a day, respectively. Rats in group IV were treated with aquadest topically 3 times in 12 hours a day. Three rats of each group were sacrificed on the 1st day of the research, and the histological sections were made for reepithelialization observation. The rest rats were sacrificed on the 3rd day and the histological sections were made for collagen observation. Tissue continuity restoration was measured through reepithelialization rate and collagen pattern-orientation parameters. Data were analyzed by performing Kruskal-Wallis test followed by Mann-Whitney test. Result: all groups which received sunflower seed oil exhibited faster reepithelialization and denser collagen significantly than the control group. Conclusion: sunflower seed oil stimulates reepithelialization and the formation of collagen fibers.
