Abstract

Poverty is a common problem in many areas in Indonesia, particularly in Java and Sumatra as the two islands with the largest economy in Indonesia. However, large population living below the poverty line can hinder economic development. This study aims at analyzing the influence of the agricultural and the industrial sectors toward poverty levels in 16 provinces in Java and Sumatra. The data were analyzed using panel data regression analysis technique with the Fixed Effect Model approach. The results showed that: (1) the simultaneous testing (F test) indicated the agricultural and the industrial sectors have a negative and significant effect on the poverty level; (2) the partial test (t test) suggested the agricultural and the industrial sectors both partially have a negative and significant effect on the poverty level; and (3) the results of the coefficient of determination (R2) showed the independent variables explains 96% variation of the poverty level.
