Abstract

The concept of aesthetics in dental care has grown both among practitioners and society. Most of the patients who visit dentists today have realized and want a more attractive and more aesthetic appearance of teeth when smiling. The aesthetic smile has a balance in the proportions of lips, teeth and gingiva. But sometimes the disharmony resulted in the appearance of a smile to be not ideal. Gummy smile is a condition characterized by excessive exposure of the maxillary gingiva when smiling. One of the periodontal surgical treatments that can be done to correct gummy smile is crown lengthening. Crown lengthening is a periodontal surgical procedure aimed at reducing the periodontal tissue to increase the length of the clinical crown. The crown lengthening procedure involves removing the gingival margins towards the apical tooth, thus increasing the length of the clinical crown. Crown lengthening surgical methods include gingivoplasty / gingivectomy procedures; apically positioned flap with or without ostectomy. This article aims to find indications, preoperative analyzes, and various methods in the surgical crown lengthening as one of the treatment options in the case of a gummy smile. Crown lengthening is one of the therapeutic options in a gummy smile. The selection of techniques is based on indications for each case to obtain optimal care outcomes.
