Abstract

Background: Dental age is an age that assessed by the development and eruption of teeth while chronological age is an age that determined by the date of birth. One of the dental age estimation method in children by using the panoramic radiograph is Schour and Massler method. The purpose of this study was to determine differences between chronological and dental age using Schour and Massler method based on panoramic radiography in Dental Hospital (RSKGM) of South Sumatera Province. Method: The present study was analytic observational with a cross sectional approach by using 46 panoramic radiographs of children aged 6-12 years in the period 2019-2021 at radiology installation in RSKGM. Panoramic radiographs were analyzed by observing the growth and development of teeth to obtain the dental age while the chronological age was gotten by subtraction the date of patient birth from the date of radiograph taken. Data were analyzed by using the Wilcoxon test and Simple Linear Regression analysis. Result: The Wilcoxon test showed there was no significant differences between dental age by Schour and Massler and chronological age (p value>0,05). Regression analysis showed there was a correlation between dental age by Schour and Massler and chronological age (p value<0,05). Conclusion: Estimated the dental age by Schour and Massler method was closer to chronological age thereby Schour and Massler method can be used to estimate the age of children, especially with an age range of 6-12 years.
