Abstract

Background: Tooth extraction is an action that often performed in dentistry which caused injury. Giant featherback affected post extraction wound healing process because its contents such as albumin, omega-3, vitamin A, but the effect is still unknown. This study aims to determine the effect of giant featherback (Chitala lopis) extract administration orally on the number of fibroblast cells in wound healing after tooth extraction of male strain wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus). Methods: This is a true experimental study with post test only control group design. A total 24 male wistar rat were divided into 6 groups. After mandibular incisor was extracted, rats in group 1, 2, 3 were given giant featherback extract 100%, and group 4, 5, 6 were given aquadest orally once a day. Group 1 and 4 were treated for 3 days, group 2 and 5 were treated for 5 days, group 3 and 6 were treated for 7 days, then euthanasia was done and histological preparations were made. The number of fibroblast was calculated using Olympus software, and analyzed using one way ANOVA test. Results: The number of fibroblasts in the aquadest group for 3 days showed the highest average value, and the giant featherback extract for 3 days showed the lowest average value. ANOVA test showed there was no significant difference in the number of fibroblasts between treatment and control group (p>0,05). Conclusion: Giant featherback extract which was administrated orally had no significant effect on fibroblast amount in post extraction wound healing strain wistar rats.
