Abstract
Today many people use wood for various purposes, such as for the construction of buildings and household appliances. Wood as construction, many derived from plants or that are in some vast forest in Indonesia. Can be used for course quality wood should be processed first, then the wood machining process need to be done several process one stage of the process of finishing is sanding. The main purpose of this study is to obtain the optimum sanding conditions for minimum surface roughness. Specimens were sanded teak wood (Tectona grandis), wood ovened first according to ASTM 4442-07 with the provisions of sandpaper with grain size number 180 and depth of cut 0.2 mm by using a horizontal milling machine modified. This study uses a CCD (central composite design) for varying the belt speed (V) with interval 7,51 - 24,49 m/s, feed rate (f) with interval 13,48 – 34 mm/min, and the depth of cut (a) of the surface roughness (Ra). Specimens used in this study were 12 pieces of teak wood is sanded using a horizontal milling machine modified. After the wood surface roughness test. The highest value with surface roughness average Ra = 1,733 μm and the lowest surface roughness values with surface roughness average Ra = 0.933 μm. It can be concluded the higher belt speed (V) resulted in lower values of Ra, while the higher feed rate (f) resulted in the higher value of Ra.
