Abstract

Premenstrual syndrome is very common in adolescent girls and women of childbearing age. Generally, PMS symptoms appear 1-2 weeks before the first day of menstruation each month. The purpose of this study was to determine and identify the relationship between diet and body mass index with the incidence of premenstrual syndrome in public health science students at Sriwijaya University class 2017. This research method used an analytical observational method with a quantitative approach with a cross sectional design. The number of respondents in this study was 46 samples using lottery sampling. Information was collected through 3x24 hour food recall interviews, measurement of height and weight, and filling out the Shorted Premenstrual Assessment Form questionnaire. The results of univariate analysis showed that 31 (67.4%) respondents had premenstrual syndrome. Bivariate results showed that there was a relationship between diet and the incidence of premenstrual syndrome with the results of statistical tests p value = 0.005 < (α = 0.05) PR = 2.222; 95% CI = 1.157 – 4.267. Bivariate results showed that there was a relationship between body mass index and the incidence of premenstrual syndrome with statistical test results p value = 0.006 < (α = 0.05) PR = 2.023; 95% CI = 1.167 – 3.507. The conclusion of this study is that poor diet and abnormal BMI are factors that cause premenstrual syndrome. Students are advised to consume sufficient nutritional intake such as carbohydrates, fat, vitamin B6, calcium and magnesium and to do physical activity or work out for at least 30 minutes per day in a row such as going up and down stairs, sweeping and mopping the floor of the house.
