Abstract

Background: Elementary school children are considered vulnerable group to have iron deficiency anemia, because of the high needs for iron during their growing period. Insufficient iron consumption and low iron absorption are the main causes of iron deficiency anemia. This condition is more common in rural areas. Rural areas are commonly related to the limited availability of health facilities and food. This study aims to determine the profile of the stages of iron deficiency anemia in elementary school children in rural areas in Kecamatan Tuah Negeri. Methods: The study design was cross sectional, with samples of 7-12 years old elementary school children in Kecamatan Tuah Negeri. The total sample is 91 children that were taken randomly. Hb levels, Fe serum levels, TIBC levels and transferrin saturation were examined, while the characteristic data from the samples were obtained through a questionnaire. The stages of iron deficiency anemia are classified into 3 stages. After that, the obtained data were analyzed with univariate analysis. Results: the results of the hematological examination showed that most of the children had low Hb levels (52.7%), 48.3% had Fe serum level <40 µg / dL and 27.5% had TIBC levels > 390 µg / dL and 28.6% had transferrin saturation <10%. Based on the stages of deficiency anemia, it was found that 15.4% of children had anemia without iron deficiency, 33% of children had iron deficiency, 37.4% of children had iron deficiency anemia and only 14.3% of children were normal. Conclusion: iron deficiency and low levels of Hb increase the incidence of iron deficiency anemia in elementary school children in Tuah Negeri, Musi Rawas Regency.
