Abstract

Tujuan penelitian ini adalah mengetahui hubungan antara fear of failure dan mental toughness pada atlet. Terdapat 5 hipotesis dalam penelitian, yaitu : adanya hubungan antara kelima dimensi fear of failure yakni fears of experiencing shame and embarrassment, fears of devaluing one’s self-estimate, fears of having an uncertain future, fears of important others losing interest serta fears of upsetting important others dan mental toughness pada atlet. Partisipan dalam penelitian ini adalah 150 orang atlet olahraga kelompok di Indonesia. Penelitian ini menggunakan teknik sampling incidental. Variabel fear of failure diukur menggunakan skala baku Performance Failure Appraisal Inventory-Revised dari Conroy, Willow & Metzler (2002) yang telah diadaptasi kedalam Bahasa Indonesia. Variabel mental toughness diukur dengan menggunakan skala mental toughness yang disusun oleh peneliti berdasarkan komponen dari Gucciardi, Gordon & Dimmock (2009). Analisis data dilakukan dengan menggunakan teknik korelasi non-parametrik Spearman Rank. Berdasarkan keseluruhan hasil analisis korelasi hipotesis pada masing-masing dimensi fear of failure menunjukkan hasil yakni nilai rs yang bernilai negatif yang berada pada rentang -0,395 sampai dengan -0,181 dengan nilai p<0,05. Berdasarkan hasil tersebut, dapat disimpulkan bahwa terdapat hubungan yang negatif antara seluruh dimensi fear of failure dan mental toughness pada atlet. Dengan demikian seluruh hipotesis yang diajukan diterima.
