Abstract

Jackfruit leaves (Artocarpus heterophyllus Lam.) contain secondary metabolites such as flavonoids which have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. This study aims to determine the anti-ulcer effectiveness of jackfruit leaves ethanol extract against white male wistar rats induced by absolute ethanol. The extract was obtained by maceration method using ethanol 96%. The animals were devided into 6 groups. The normal group was given 0.5% of Na CMC, the positive group was given omeprazole 20 mg/kgBW in 0.5% Na CMC, the negative group was only given 0.5% Na CMC, group 1 was given 100 mg/kgBW of ethanol extract of jackfruit leaves, group 2 was given 200 mg/kgBW of ethanol extract of jackfruit leaves, and group 3 was given 400 mg/kgBW of ethanol extract of jackfruit leaves for 14 days. All treatment groups were induced by ethanol absolute on day 15 except the normal group. The total flavonoid content contained in jackfruit leaf extract was 42.571 mgQE/g extract with a percentage of 4.257%. The test results showed that the ethanol extract of jackfruit leaves (200 and 400 mg/kgBW) was able to prevent gastric damage where there was a significant difference compared to the negative control (p<0.05). Based on histopathological results, it shows that ethanol extract of jackfruit leaves can reduce necrotic lesions on the gastric mucosa. Group 3 (400 mg/kgBW) had the best anti-ulcer effect with an ulcer index value of 8.26 and the prevention index of 39.73%.
