Abstract
ABSTRACT: The position of Pulau Payung which is in the middle of the Musi River estuary causes this island to have the potential to experience environmental pollution in the form of copper (Cu) and Lead (Pb) pollution originating from industrial activities in the upstream and downstream parts of the river. One of the efforts that can be done to overcome the pollution of mangrove areas is to use Avicennia marina as a phytoremediation agent. This study aims to determine the potential and phytoremediation mechanism of Avicennia marina against heavy metals Cu and Pb in the mangrove area of Pulau Payung, South Sumatra. The research was carried out from April to June 2021. The sampling process was carried out in the mangrove area of Pulau Payung, South Sumatra Province with the convenience sampling method. Heavy metal analysis was carried out using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (AAS) at the Environmental Laboratory, South Sumatra DLHP. The calculation of the Translocation Factor (TF) aims to determine the phytoremediation mechanism in A.marina and the Bioconcentration Factor (BCF) to determine the levels of heavy metals Cu and Pb in the mangrove A marina in Payung Island, South Sumatra. The results of this study showed that the accumulation of lead in the sediment, roots, and leaves were 6.628 mg/kg, 1.033 mg/kg and 1.583 mg/kg, respectively. Cu metal accumulation in sediment, roots and leaves were 7.246 mg/kg, 1.098 mg/kg and 0.908 mg/kg, respectively. A.marina in Payung Island is included as an excluder plant which is characterized by a BCF value < 1 so that its potential as a phytoremediator plant is low. Avicennia marina in absorbing Pb uses a phytoextraction mechanism which is characterized by a TF value > 1 which is 1.53. Meanwhile, Cu metal uses a phytostabilization mechanism which is characterized by a TF value < 1, which is 0.68. Keywords: Avicennia marina, Phytoremediation, Heavy Metals, Pulau Payung.
