Abstract

Myopia is a refractive error in which parallel rays coming from an object are focused in front of the retina when the eye is not accommodating. Publication of research results regarding the characteristics of myopia patients in students at Sriwijaya University Palembang has not been found. Thus, a study of the characteristics of myopia patients in students at Sriwijaya University Palembang is needed so that it can be used in preventing progression of myopia patients based on knowing the risk factors for myopia, knowing the complications and increasing awareness for the public to have their eyes checked before time and regularly. Method. This research is a descriptive observational study with a cross sectional design. The data of this study were sourced from primary data in the form of a questionnaire given to students of the Faculty of Medicine, Sriwijaya University Palembang in 2018. This research took place from October to November 2021. The sample in this study were students of the Faculty of Medicine, Sriwijaya University Palembang in 2018 who met specified inclusion criteria. All variables were analyzed univariately. Results. From the results of the study, obtained 132 samples. The results showed that the majority of myopia patients were in the female majority group (79.5%). Headache was the most clinical manifestation (37.1%). Low myopia made up the majority of cases in both eyes (69.7%). Most of the myopia cases were treated with glasses (93.9%). There is a family history of both myopic parents (84.1%). The duration of the activity of using gadget screens with a frequent frequency is (67.4%). The use of gadgets with poor visibility (<30cm or >30cm) is (65.9 %). Myopia is dominated by the use of gadgets for a long period of time (> 3 years) as much as (93.9%). Conclusion. Gender is a significant and dominant risk factor for the incidence of myopia in students of the Faculty of Medicine, Sriwijaya University, Palembang.
