Abstract
Excessive sun exposure can also cause skin problems ranging from redness, inflammation and can trigger the appearance of skin cancer. One way to protect the skin from the sun is by using a sunscreen. Breadfruit leaves (Artocarpus altilis (Park.) Fosberg) contain flavonoids which can be used for sunscreen preparations. The purpose of this study was to determine the potential of sunscreen from cream preparations of ethanol extract of breadfruit leaves (Artocarpus altilis (Park.) Fosberg) with extract concentrations of 0%, 2%, 6% and 8% using the UV-Vis spectrophotometric method. The ethanol extract of breadfruit leaves was obtained by maceration using 96% ethanol. Measurement of total flavonoid content of breadfruit leaf ethanol extract obtained results of 24.0582 mg QE/g and measurement of total phenolic content obtained results of 21.5835 mg GAE/g. The effectiveness of sunscreens is based on determining the in-vitro SPF value using the Mansur equation. The SPF value of each formula is 0.0730 (ineffective); 6,1743 (moderate protection); 8,2154 (maximum protection); and 8,6284 (maximum protection). Evaluation of the physical properties of the cream preparations includes organoleptic, homogeneity, pH, viscosity, spreadability, adhesion and protection power. The correlation analysis between the SPF value and the evaluation of the preparation showed a positive linear relationship between the SPF of the cream and the spreadability of the cream and a negative linear relationship between the SPF of the cream and the pH, viscosity, and adhesion of the cream. The stability of the best formula is determined by the method of cycling test, centrifugal test, and exposure to UV rays. The results of the stability test showed stable results on the best formula from the sunscreen cream of the breadfruit leaf ethanol extract. Paparan sinar matahari berlebih menyebabkan masalah kulit kemerahan, peradangan, bahkan kanker kulit.
