Abstract

Soil-transmitted helminth (STH) is an infectious disease caused by Ascaris lumbricoides Trichuris trichiura, and hookworms transmitted from the soil. The risk of STH will increase in areas with contaminated water, poor sanitation, and personal hygiene conditions, and it can be found in landfills. In the landfill, there are many adults and child scavengers who collect garbage. Then, the risk of worm infection is increasing as a result of children's scavenger activities. They directly touched the garbage, it considered as poor personal hygiene practices. This study aimed to analyze personal hygiene determinants for the STH in child scavengers at the landfill. The study design was cross-sectional, with 65 respondents as child scavengers in the landfill. The independent variables in this study were clean nails, washing hand with soap before eating or drinking, washing hand with soap after defecating, and the use of footwear. Data analysis techniques used were univariate, bivariate, and multivariate. The results showed that 29.2% of child scavengers were infected with STH. The variables in this study that were significantly related to worm infection were nail hygiene (p-value 0.003), washing hand with soap before eating or drinking (p-value 0.002), washing hand with soap after defecating (p-value 0.000). Nail cleanliness was the most dominant variable affecting STH in child scavengers after being controlled with other variables (PR = 4.944). The researcher suggests holding counseling related to the good personal hygiene application as well as providing handwashing facilities in the landfill. Then, medical checkups for children to identification the STH infection and giving deworming medicine to adult and child scavengers.
