Abstract

Background: Chronic tonsillitis is a continuation of acute or subacute recurrent inflammation of the tonsils that causes chronic inflammation. Generally, clinical features such as enlarged tonsils can be found in tonsilitis patients. Enlarged tonsil size occurs due to parenchymal hyperplasia or fibrinoid degeneration with obstruction of the tonsillar crypts. However, a relatively small tonsil size can also be found in some cases. This can occur due to the formation of chronic scar tissue on the tonsils. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between the characteristics of chronic tonsillitis patients with enlarged tonsils at Department ENT Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Hospital in Palembang 2018-2021 Period. Methods: This study used an analytic observational research method with a cross sectional design. The sampling method in this study used a total sampling technique. The total sample obtained was 42 patients who met the inclusion criteria. Data were taken through medical record data and direct interviews with patients by telephone. Statistical analysis was done using Fisher Exact. Results: In this study, results were obtained from 42 Chronic Tonsillitis Patients, it was found that chronic tonsillitis type was more common than acute exacerbation of chronic tonsillitis (90.5%), the most common age group was the age group 12-25 years (54.8%), the most common gender was found to be men (54.8%), the most common chief complaint was a feeling of lump in the throat (54.8%), the largest tonsil size was found to be T3-T3 size (47.6%), most patients had tonsillar hypertrophy (73.8%) in enlarged Tonsillitis and the first treatment that most patients with chronic tonsillitis had was non-operative (66.7%). After the Fisher Exact analysis, it was found that there was no relationship between the characteristics of chronic tonsillitis patients and tonsillar enlargement as indicated by p value > 0.050 (age p = 0.270, gender p = 0.726, chief complaint of painful swallowing p = 1,000, chief complaint of lump in throat p= 0.726, chief complaint of sleep was snoring p=1,000, hearing loss p=1,000, discharge from ear p=1,000, intermittent fever p=1,000 and management p=0,723). Conclusion: There is no relationship between the characteristics of chronic tonsillitis patients with enlarged tonsils. Keyword: Characteristics, Chronic tonsillitis, Enlarged tonsils
