Abstract

Menstrual personal hygiene is self-care during menstruation to maintain cleanliness and reproductive health. This study aimed to determine factors associated with personal hygiene of adolescent during menstruation. This study quantitative study with observational cross-sectional analytic disgn. The sample of this study were 308 respondents that collected by using stratified random sampling technique. Data were collected using quesionnaires of personal hygiene behavior, knowledge, attitudes, beliefs about myths, peer support, WASH facilities, and sources information. The analysis of the correlation between factors and personal hygiene were using Chi-Square test and showed that factors associated with personal hygiene were attitudes about personal hygiene (p=0,000), peer support (p=0,048), and WASH facilities (p=0,050). Factors were not associated with personal hygiene were knowledge about personal hygiene (p=0,457), beliefs about myths (p=0,097), and sources information (p=0,221). The determine factors of this study is attitudes about personal hygiene that OR (Odd Ratio) 2,462 (p=0,000). Result showed that attitude is determining factor of personal hygiene during menstruation. Positive attitude about personal hygiene contributes to lead clean behavior during menstruation that supported by the availability of WASH facilities and peers. Therefore, it is necessary to increase the development of attitudes in adolescent with health education and the availability of posters about menstrual hygiene.
