Abstract

Background: The use of gadgets has increased during Covid-19 pandemic and has become as a media and means of online learning. Use of gadget continuous in the long term can cause eye fatigue (asthenopia). Data from WHO shows the incidence of asthenopia or eye fatigue in the world ranges from 75% to 90%. Research studies in America show the prevalence of asthenopia reaches 67,8%. This study aims to determine the relationship between gadget usage duration during covid-19 pandemic with asthenopia incidence. Method: This research is an analytic observational study with cross sectional approach. Data was collected by using a questionnaire distributed online via google form. The research sample was obtained using simple random sampling method with a sample of 200 students who were Study Program of Medical Education students Faculty of Medicine Sriwijaya University in the academic year of 2018-2019. Results: The majority of respondents use gadgets with a heavy duration of ≥ 4 hours by 94,5%. The majority of respondents experienced asthenopia incidence of 59,5%. Based on the results of statistical tests using Chi-Square test method showed the p value = 0,008. This shows that there is a significant relationship between the gadget usage and the asthenopia incidence in Study Program of Medical Education students Faculty of Medicine Sriwijaya University. Conclusion: The use of gadget with a long duration (≥ 4 hours) can cause the occurrence of asthenopia incidence in Study Program of Medical Education students Faculty of Medicine Sriwijaya University.
