Abstract

This thesis is entitled "Non-Farming Sector Employment on Owner's Coffee Farmers in Terusan Baru Village, Tebing Tinggi District, Empat Lawang Regency". To find out what causes the coffee farmers to choose jobs outside the coffee sector and also to find out how farmers increase their income outside the coffee sector. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative research method. while the number of informants in this study were 8 informants. Data collection techniques were carried out by observation, interviews and documentation. This study uses James S. Coleman's Rational Choice Theory. This rational choice theory emphasizes two things, namely actors and resources. The actors here are farmers and the resource is agricultural land. The results of this study indicate that the factors that encourage owner coffee farmers in the village of Terusan Baru to choose jobs outside the coffee sector are economic factors, increased living needs, the narrowness of their agricultural land, the selling price of coffee is low, maintenance costs are greater than the sales results. and income from thesector is Non-Farming more promising. Furthermore, the results of the study also show that the way farmers increase their income outside the coffee sector is by switching professions to thesector Non-Farming such as being a construction worker, PT employees, security guards, and POLPP becoming a motorcycle taxi driver as their main income while coffee farming is their main source of income. manage as a side income in increasing income for daily living.
