Abstract

Background: Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is a virus that attacks the immune system and causes a progressive decrease in CD4 levels in the body. Low CD4 cell count causes the risk of various opportunistic infections that affect health and ability to carry out daily activities, and ultimately affect quality of life. This study aims to determine the relationship between CD4 cell count and quality of life of HIV-infected patients. Method: The type of this research is observational analytic with cross sectional design. The subjects in this study were HIV-infected patients who came to the VCT Polyclinic Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang for the period October 2021-November 2021 who met the inclusion criteria. The data was taken by purposive sampling technique and then analyzed using the Chi-Square test. Results: From 47 sample data, the highest number of CD4 cells in HIV-infected patients was 200 cells/mm3 (66%), and the highest quality of life was in the moderate category (40.4%). The patient’s sociodemographic characteristics were found in the age range of 26-35 years (44.7%) with male gender (72.3%), the highest education level was SMA (53.2%), marital status was not married (63.8 %), the most common mode of transmission is through sexual intercourse (80.9%) and the duration of diagnosis is <1 year (53.2%). The bivariate test showed a significant relationship between CD4 cell count and quality of life in HIV-infected patients (p=0.001). Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between CD4 count and quality of life in HIV-infected patients. The higher the number of CD4 cells, the higher the quality of life. Keywords: CD4 count, quality of life, HIV infection
