Abstract

Plastic pollution has become a global issue with the amount that filling the Earth's surface. Plastic pollution now increases with the presence of microplastics in personal care and cosmetics products. The widespread of microplastics is lead by the business actors, especially MNCs who use microplastics as the formulation in products that are distributed and sold around the world. The use of microplastics has negative impacts on the environment; therefore, Plastic Soup Foundation carries out its role as an environmental NGO to stop the use of microplastics. This research aims to analyze the role of the Plastic Soup Foundation as an NGO in fighting for environmental justice by using the concept of NGO's role by Shamima and Potter, which analyzed from four roles. The results of this research show that the Plastic Soup Foundation's efforts in carries out its role as an NGO are seen from (1) public education and consciousness-raising role, the Plastic Soup Foundation initiated the Beat the Microbead campaign, launched the BTMB app, being one of the speakers at the international conference GLOC-2, and held the Plastic Health Summit. (2) The role of monitoring other transnational actors, Plastic Soup Foundation launched the Zero Plastic Inside certification, which can be used as a guarantee for microplastics free products. (3) The role of advocacy and lobbying, the Plastic Soup Foundation gathered NGOs in the Beat the Microbead Coalition, which later succeeded in making Unilever remove microplastic ingredients in scrub products. One of the members also succeeded in persuading the United States to sign the Microbead-Free Waters Act 2015. (4) The role of agenda-setting, the Plastic Soup Foundation is one of the stakeholders in the input process of the European Union's microplastic restriction proposal submitted by the ECHA.
