Abstract

In the last few years, there have been many earthquakes in Indonesia which caused damage to many people's houses, office buildings and other public facilities. One of the structural elements that have an important role in a structural system is the column. Columns support vertical loads from floor or roof slabs and distribute these loads to the structure below. Therefore, the column has an important role in the structural system of the building, because if there is a failure in the column structure it will result in the collapse of other structural components. In this research, a numerical study was conducted using the ANSYS program with a finite element analysis basis to see the performance of the column against cyclic lateral loads using normal reinforced concrete and lightweight concrete materials. The results of the program analysis using normal concrete materials were validated with the results of experimental research by Pudjisuryadi, et al. (2015) with the difference in output must be less than 10%. From the program analysis, the output in the form of a hysteresis curve is the relationship between displacement and lateral loads, stiffness and structural strength. The maximum lateral load obtained from the ANSYS program and the results of experimental research by Pudjisuryadi, et al. (2015) has a difference of 1.71% for tensile loads, 2.45% for compressive loads. Columns with lightweight concrete material are able to withstand a greater load than normal concrete because lightweight concrete has a higher compressive strength than normal concrete, which is 27.9 MPa.
