Abstract
Background: iron was essential during the infancy of a child. The need for a high iron during growth should be accompanied by a sufficient intake of iron. Low intake of iron leads to iron deficiencies and risks to stunting events in children. The study was to analyze the relationship between child characteristics and iron deficiencies in elementary school children in rawas district. Method: this study is an analytic observational study with a cross-sectional design. Samples of 79 people were taken random from elementary school students in musi rawas district. Child characteristic identification using a questionnaire. The iron deficiency in children, however, is performed with a serum screening using the elisa method. The data was analyzed using version 16 SPSS with univariate, bivariates, and multivariates analysis. Results: the results of the fe serum measure were obtained that 44.3% children with iron deficiency, and 55.7% did not develop iron deficiencies. There is a meaningful relationship between a child's characteristics (parental incomes, iron intake, and nutritional status) and iron deficiencies (p< 0.05). Multivariate tests show that nutritional status is the most dominant factor with regard to iron deficiency in children. Conclusion: there is a meaningful relationship between child characteristics (parental incomes, iron intake, and nutritional status) with iron deficiencies in elementary school children in musi rawas district. Increased health promotion in regard to the importance of iron intake for child growth requires effort.
