Abstract
Background: ARI is one of the main causes of morbidity and mortality in children and under five years old worldwide. Deaths caused by ARI varied significantly across regions. ARI can be caused by various agents such as bacteria, fungi, and virus. ARI caused by bacteria is treated with antibiotics. Irrational prescribing of antibiotics is still a health services’ problem in Indonesia, for example the administration of antibiotics for viral infections and the use of inappropriate antibiotics, causing allergic responses in ARI patients. This shows the need for alternative antibiotics as treatment. One alternative option is the macrolide group. The most macrolide that often given to treat ARI is azithromycin. Therefore, this study aims to determine the rationality of treatment with azithromycin in ARI patients at RSUP Moh. Hoesin Palembang Period 1 July 2018-30 June 2021. Method: Research on the rationality of drug use has been carried out at RSUP Dr. Moh. Hoesin Palembang with the data studied are 30 medical records of patients which appropriate with the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The entire data will be analyzed using SPSS v26. Results: In this study, the characteristics of respondents who used azithromycin were mostly in the age group of 46-55 years (40%), male gender (66,7%), and the number of drugs per prescription are two (46,7%). The use of azithromycin is based on the criteria for the appropriate indication (100%), appropriate dose (96,7%), appropriate frequency of administration (100%), appropriate time of administration (100%), appropriate route of administration (100%), and appropriate drug interaction (86,4%). Conclusion: The rational use of azithromycin is based on the criteria for the appropriate indication (100%), appropriate dose (96,7%), appropriate frequency of administration (100%), appropriate time of administration (100%), appropriate route of administration (100%), and appropriate drug interaction (86,4%).
