Abstract

Background: Mosquitoes are one of the vectors that transmit pathogens through their bites to humans and animals. Several diseases caused by Anopheles are malaria and filariasis. Despite of some prevention and control action of Anopheles in South Sumatra, the malaria-endemic is still a problem in these areas. Data regarding the distribution of Anopheles mosquitoes in South Sumatra is still needs deeper identification. This study was conducted to identify the morphological characteristics of Anopheles spp. in one area in South Sumatra, Musi Banyuasin Regency. Methods: This research was descriptive observational study with a field survey method. Mosquito in Musi Banyuasin Regency from August – October 2021 were observed at the Laboratory of Parasitology, Faculty of Medicine, Sriwijaya University. Every mosquito classified into its genuses based on its morphology. Results: Four genus specifically Aedes, Armigeres, Culex, and Anopheles had been found in Bayung Lencir Village with proportion respectively, 2,6%, 5,1%, 88,5%, dan 3,8%. Eleven species of mosquitos consisted of Aedes lineatopenne, Armigeres subalbatus, Armigeres kessell, Culex gelidus, Culex nigropunctatus, Culex quinquefasciatus, Culex tritaeniorhynchus, Culex vishnui, Aedes aegypti, Anopheles kochi, and Anopheles vagus had been discovered. All of the Anopheles spp. have been founded around the livestock. Anopheles vagus had been identified as the mosquito with rare feathery antenna, costal and subcostal wings with clear white patches interspersed with dark colors, and the proboscis size as same as the palpus, while Anopheles kochi had been identified as the mosquito with a collection of dark scales on abdomen II and IV sternite and pale bracelets on the tarsi of the hind legs. Conclusions: Four mosquito’s genuses had been discovered in Bayung Lencir Village specifically Aedes, Armigeres, Culex, and Anopheles. The identified Anopheles mosquitoes were categorized as Anopheles vagus and Anopheles kochi.
