Abstract

The Musi River is a large and longer river in Sumatra Island, located in South Sumatra. Most of anthropogenic activities and industries around of river have negative ecological impact on water quality and bacterial diversity. The aim of this study was to determine of bacterial diversity of 16S rRNA genes at the Musi River. Bacterial diversity analysis was conducted using Terminal Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (T-RFLP) technique. The results showed that the types of bacteria are found Bacillus cereus, Pseudomonas sp., Pseudomonas plecoglossicida and Desulfovibrio oxamicus. While the diversity of bacteria in BsuR1 restriction enzyme had a range of Shannon-Weiner diversity index (H) of 0.28 to 2.31, richness (R) of 4 to 12, and evenness (E) of 0.11 to 0.95. Meanwhile, the range of H, R, and E of Msp1 restriction enzyme were 0.82 to 1.79, 6 to 13, and 0.42 to 0.76, subsequently. The Principal Component Analysis (PCA) showed that there was water quality (pH, ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate) related to bacterial diversity, with the result that the environmental conditions of Musi River waters are classified in low stability.
