Abstract

Background : Cerebral Palsy (CP) is a group of motor disorders caused by permanent damage to brain tissue in the development of movement and posture. CP children have comorbidities that are often is difficulty eating caused by the incidence of dysphagia which is often experienced by CP children, this causes many CP children have malnutrition with the most common micronutrient deficiency being iron deficiency (ID). Iron deficiency in CP can have a negative impact on decreasing muscle strength and motor activity, thus this study aims to analyze the relationship between CP and iron status in children at RSUP DR. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang. Methods : This study used a cross sectional observational analytic design. The research subjects were pediatric patients aged 0-6 years at the growth and development clinic. Samples were taken using a purposive sampling method from the medical records of the Pediatric Growth and Development Polyclinic, Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang period June 2018-June 2021. All research subjects were subjected to laboratory examinations (ferritin, serum iron, and hemoglobin), and Denver II assessment. A total of 129 samples have met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The data obtained were analyzed using the Chi-square test or Fisher's exact test. Results : The most common iron status in CP children was ID (42.9%), IDA(32.5%), normal (18.2%), and iron depletion (6.5%). There was a significant relationship between CP and iron status (p=0.032, OR=2.591 95%CI: 1.154-5.816). It was found that CP had a relationship with ID (p=0.013, OR=3.199 95%CI: 1.260-8.119) and IDA(p=0.035, OR=2.827 95%CI: 1.067-7.495). Conclusion : There is a relationship between CP with iron status and there is a relationship between CP with iron deficiency and iron deficiency anemia.
