Abstract
Background: Malignant melanoma in skin tumors originate from melanocyte cells. The development of melanoma depends greatly on the interaction of melanoma cancer cells with microenvirontment tumor (TME). Tumor Associated Macrophages (TAMs) are drawn to tumor cells due to the release of chemokine by tumor cells. A high density of TAMs towards tumors corelate with poor prognosis. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the density of TAMs with the characteristics of malignant melanoma patients at RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang from 2016 – 2020. Method: This study uses a cross-sectional observational analytic study using primary and secondary data. The sample used was all the histopathological malignant melanoma cases and the medical records which fit the inclusion criteria at the Anatomical Pathology Department, RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang. The observation and the counting of the macrophages was done using the malignant melanoma sample. A hematoxylin eosin stain was applied and observed using a trinocular BX51 microscope. The sampling technique was total sampling with univariate and bivariate data analysis and computerized data processing with the chi-square test. Results: In this study, there was no significant relationship (p-value >0.05) between age, gender, occupation, tumor location and histopathological type with the density of Tumor Associated Macrophages (TAMs). Conclusion: Univariate and bivariate analysis state that there is no significant relationship between age, gender, occupation, tumor location and histopathological type with the density of Tumor Associated Macrophages (TAMs). Keywords: Malignant melanoma (MM), Microenvirontment tumor (TME) and Tumor Associated Macrophages (TAMs).
