Abstract

The leaf miner L. sativae was firstly found in Indonesia in the middle of 1994 in Cisarua. The damage caused by this leaf miner on cucumber might decrease the yield up to 60%. In order to control this pest, the current effort is mostly focused on integrated pest management (IPM). In the development and application of IPM, itwas necessary to study the ecology of the targeted pest. The objectives of this research were to figure out the adult population ofL. sativae and the damage caused by the larvae on cucumber leaves, and to analyzethe relationship between adult population and the leaf mining tunnel caused byL. sativae, and to analyze the relationship between larval abundance and itsparasitoids. The research used observation method, i.e. by directly observing crop samples. The calculation was made for average values of adult and larval population of L. sativae, abundance and apparent parasitism of each parasitoid, and damages caused by the insect. The trend of changes of abundance and damage level from time to time were presented in curve or histogram. Regression analyses made to figure out the relationship between adult population and the number of mining traces and the relationship between larval abundance and parasitoid.cropwere4The results showed that the highest adult population of L. sativae was found on five-week old crop, i.e. 7.6 adults per trap and the lowest was found on two- week old crop, i.e. 3.1 adults per trap. The highest damage intensity was found on three-week old crop amounted to 36.89% while the lowest was found on six-week old crop amounted to 12.12%. The damage intensity was higher in the lower parts of the plant than those of the upper parts. The damage intensity on the lower partsranged from 23.71 to 73.26%, while on upper parts ranged from 0.02 to 3.91%. Thesymptoms of the damage caused by L. sativae was a minute and curly tunnel on theupper surface of the host crop. The regression coefficient (b = 17.0) showed thateach adult of L. sativae caused one mining tunnel. The higher the number ofL. sativae larvae, the more the parasitized host crop (R-Sq(adj) = 0,784: P= 0,273). The higher the number of L. sativae larvae on cucumber crop, the more the parasitized host crop (b = 0.622; R-Sq(adj) = 0,851; P = 0,003). The highest apparent parasitism was found on five-week old crop, amounted to 41.99%
