Abstract
Research has been done to analysis the nicotine levels in clove cigarettes and white cigarettes. This study aims to determine the nicotine content of cigarettes using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and to determine the ratio of nicotine levels of clove cigarettes and white cigarettes to quality standards according to the Indonesian National Standard (SNI) 01-0766-89 and 01-0765- 99. In this study, tobacco samples were extracted using a centrifuge with the addition of 2 M NaOH and pro-analyst methanol. Qualitative and quantitative tests were carried out in this study. The results of the nicotine analysis on GC-MS resulted in a chromatogram obtained from the standard solution showing the highest peak at a retention time of 4.93 minutes while the clove and white cigarette samples showed a retention time of 4.92 minutes and 4.90 minutes. Based on the results of the mass spectrum obtained on the fragment data with the GC-MS library data. The spectrum results give a molecular ion peak of 162 m/z with the molecular formula C10H14N2 3-(1 methyl-2-pyrrolidine)-pyridine or nicotine. In the results, nicotine levels were carried out using the gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) method for clove cigarettes A and B were 0,02 % and 0,05 %, while the nicotine levels obtained from white cigarettes A and B were 0,03 %. and 0,01 %. From the results of nicotine levels obtained according to the comparison of the quality standard of the Indonesian National Standard (SNI) 01-0766-89, the nicotine content of clove cigarettes is a maximum of 2 % nicotine content, while white cigarettes according to the standard of SNI 01-0765-99 have a maximum nicotine content of 3 %. From the results obtained, clove cigarettes and white cigarettes meet the requirements of SNI quality standards
