Abstract
Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) is a polyphagous pest that attacks maize plantations in Indonesia. S. frugiperda attacks maize when maize is in the generative and vegetative phases which can be economically detrimental. One of the controls carried out in reducing the population of this pest is by using endophytic fungi. Endophytic fungi can act as entomopathogens to control S. frugiperda larvae, can stimulate corn growth and can also dissolve phosphate in the soil. The existence of endophytic fungi has great potential but many do not know about it. Therefore, this study aimed to test and determine the pathogenicity of endophytic entomopathogenic fungi against S. frugiperda larvae, to test the ability of endophytic entomopathogenic fungi to dissolve phosphate, and to test endophytic entomopathogenic fungi as corn growth promoters. This study used a virulence test method for S. frugiperda larvae using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) which was repeated three times with 1 control and 7 isolate treatments, namely JgSPK, JaGiP, JgCrJr, JaTpOi(1), JaSPKPga(3), JaTpOi(2 ) and CaTpPga and observed for 12 days. The observed variables included the effect of endophytic fungi on mortality, feeding preferences, body weight and feces of S. frugiperda larvae, the effect of endophytic fungi as corn growth promoters and the effect of endophytic fungi in dissolving phosphate. The results of this study were that the seven endophytic fungal isolates microscopically had different morphological characteristics of fungal structures. The pathogenic endophytic fungi isolates in controlling S. frugiperda were CaTpPga isolates with mortality reaching 32.00% and the shortest LT50 and LT95 ie 13.21 days and 27.03 days with symptoms of larval infection being dead, dry, stiff, mummified and their bodies covered with mycelium. In this study, the seven endophytic fungi were proven to be able to dissolve phosphate with the highest phosphate Solubility Index (SI) in JaTpOi(2) isolates, which was 3.30 cm. The conclusion in this study was that the seven endophytic fungi had the ability to kill larvae with the highest pathogenicity in three isolates, namely CaTpPga 32.00%. The highest phosphate solubilization ability was found in the three isolates JaTpOi(2) 3.30 cm, JaTpOi(1) 3.01 cm and JgSPK 3.00 cm and proved to have the ability to accelerate the growth rate of maize.
