Abstract
Banana (Musa sp.) is a fruits commodity promising good profits. Banana has roots in the form of rhizomes and are not equipped with taproots. The harvest season occurs throughout the year so that it is favored by the world's population. Banana is a source of vitamins, minerals and carbohydrates and the price is relatively cheap. Banana plant diversity is needed in determining plant breeding strategies. However, there are obstacles, namely the banana dwarf disease caused by Banana bunchy top virus (BBTV). Banana dwarf disease is one of the important diseases caused by viruses. Dwarf disease (BBTD) infects all growth stages of banana plant, but this disease is more often found in young banana plants. BBTV is transmitted by banana aphid Pentalonia nigronervosa Coquerel. This disease is also carried when transporting banana seedlings. Plants that often become alternative hosts are cardamom plants which are members of the Zingiberaceae family whose growing environment is the same as banana plants so that they affect the epidemiology of BBTV, especially in terms of transmission and spread. The purpose of this study was to determine the biology of Pentalonia nigronervosa associated with cardamom plants and to determine the efficiency of transmission of Banana Bunchy Top Virus by Pentalonia nigronervosa after being passed on cardamom plants. This research was conducted in the Bahri Umar Room, Department of Plant Pests and Diseases, Plant Protection Study Program, Faculty of Agriculture, Sriwijaya University. This research was conducted from July 2021 to December 2021. This study used a randomized block design with 4 treatments and 5 replications where each unit consisted of 3 plants. The treatment of 1 Pentalonia nigronervosa without passing plant was as a control, in the treatment 2 P. nigronervosa were passed on cardamom plant for 24 hours, treatment of 3 P. nigronervosa was passed on cardamom plant for 48 hours, and treatment 4 was P. nigronervosa was passed on cardamom plants for 72 hours. The results showed that the P. nigronervosa could grow and develop on cardamom plants and produce new generation ranging from 3 to 12 individual per imago with an average of 6.5. In this study, it was also found that there was no significant difference between P. nigronervosa that was passed on cardamom plants and those that were not passed (Control) in transmitting BBTV.
