Abstract

Indonesia has the second largest peatland in the world with an area of 13,43 million hectares. Peatland productivity is highly dependent on the physical and chemical conditions of the peatlands and the management carried out. One of the horticultural crops cultivated in shallow to moderate peatlands is red chili (Capsicum Annuum, L.). Peat soil is good soil for red chili plant growth when viewed from the number of pores related to oxygen exchange for plant root growth, but with the presence of other inherent properties such as high soil acidity, low base saturation and low availability of elements. Both macro and micro nutrients cause peat soils to be classified as marginal soils and efforts are needed for appropriate soil management. This study aims to determine the level of suitability of peatlands in Lubuk Dalam Village, Kayu Agung District, OKI Regency, South Sumatra for the cultivation of red chili plants. This research was conducted in December 2020-February 2021. The method used in this study is a detailed level soil survey with the soil sampling method being cluster sampling (CS) where the sample points are divided into 3 groups. The number of sample points from the research location was 16 points with soil samples taken at a depth of 0-30 cm from the land surface. After conducting field analysis and soil analysis in the laboratory, the land characteristics were matched with the land suitability table for red chili plants. The results obtained are N-rc/nr/na/oa at all sample points for both actual land suitability and Nrc suitability levels at all sample points for potential land suitability. So it can be concluded that the land is not suitable for the cultivation of red chili plants and is more recommended for native peat swamp and plantation crops.
