Abstract

Indonesia has low quality coal reserves which are quite abundant. Low quality coal can be a source of fuel if handled properly. Coal upgrading is one way to improve coal quality. Low quality coal needs to be heated to reduce water content. Heating coal tends to absorb water again due to the empty pores of coal. The addition of additives can act as a coating to prevent the water from returning to fill the pores of the coal. In this study, the additive used was coconut oil. Coconut oil is the result of extraction from coconut meat which is dried by heating. This research was conducted to improve the physical and chemical characteristics of coal. In this study, coal was crushed to -30 + 50 # and heated in furnaces. Then the heating coal is printed with a printing compressive strength of 150 kg / cm2. The variables used in this study are variations in the addition of coating material (0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%) and variations in heating temperature (100°C, 200°C, 300°C). The addition of coating material is very strong affecting the characteristics of coconut oil mixed coal. Coating material composition that produces the best coal quality is the addition of coating material by 20%. Heating temperature also has a very strong influence on the characteristics of coal produced. The heating temperature that produces the best coal quality is at a heating temperature of 3000C. Coal which is heated at 300°C with the composition of adding coconut oil by 20% produces an analysis in the form of 6.2% moisture content, 48.7% flying substance content, 6.7% ash content, 38.4 % carbon content of caloric value 6.384 cal / gr, and water absorption is 5.29%.
